Pioneer Peak Mission Statement

The mission of the Pioneer Peak Crew is to provide the State of Alaska with a highly skilled Initial Attack resource that will maintain the principles of duty, respect and integrity to protect life and property during both fire prevention and fire suppression activities.

Pioneer peak values are based on the following principles:

Duty

  • Be proficient in your job.
  • Make sound and timely decisions
  • Ensure assignments are clear, preformed to a high quality in the shortest time possible.
  • Opportunities for career development are made available and utilized.

Respect

  • Know your coworkers and look out for their safety.
  • Communicate with crewmembers and leaders.
  • Work to build a team and support one another.
  • Employ your full capabilities while on the job.

Integrity

  • Based on pride, loyalty, and honor.
  • Know yourself, your capabilities, and seek improvement.
  • Accept responsibility for your actions, good or bad.  Set a good example.

Physical Courage

  • Based on an "attitude" of wanting to be the best.
  • Going above and beyond what others are willing to do.
  • Willing to give your best effort in physical and mentally taxing situations.

Moral Courage

  • Based on maintaining a high level of duty, respect and integrity under adverse conditions, in the face of criticism and in mentally taxing assignment.

Physical Standards

1 ½ mile run: 10:30 or less. (Conducted at Interview)
Sit-ups: 40 in 60 seconds.
Pack Test: 40 min. or less.
Push-ups: 50 in 60 seconds. (Conducted at Interview)
Pull-ups:
7 for body weight 110lbs and less.
6 for body weight 110 - 135lbs.
5 for body weight 135 - 170 lbs.
4 for body weight 170lbs. and above.

Employment Opportunities

Typical season: April 15th - October 1st.

Training begins April 15th. The crew trains for 80 hours and is available for assignment May 1st. When not on assignment the crew performs "Project Work" in the Anchorage and Mat-Su Boroughs. In addition to project work, the crew supports local fire preparedness by filling positions on Forestry Engines and Heli-Tack. The crew is very versatile and capable during all aspects of Initial and Extended Attack.

College Students

As stated above, the crew starts April 15th. Most colleges and universities are not finished by that date. If you are serious about working in this field, either postpone for a year or wait until you are graduated to engage at this level of employment. After 1 full season with the crew, you can request for leniency on start or end dates.

All positions will be posted on Workplace Alaska: http://workplace.alaska.gov/ starting starting February, 2006. F. Tech 3 positions will open for application for 10 days. F. Tech 2 and 1 positions will be open for 20 days. Please follow the instructions carefully and contact Norm McDonald to ensure the applications has been received.

The Pioneer Peak Crew typically hires 1 or 2 rookies every season. If you have no experience and do not have a "Red Card" or do not know what one is, please Email Norm McDonald with questions. The Red Card class is held the second week in April every year and is 1 week long and usually free.
