2025 DOF WILDLAND FIRE ACADEMIES

The Division of Forestry and Fire Protection is hosting four targeted training academies in the spring of 2025. Contact your Area Office to apply. All applicants must be sponsored by an Agency and nominations will be submitted by your training officer.

  • Basic Wildland Firefighter Academy (Location - Chugiak, April 19th-29th) – Academy provides basic training in wildland suppression and fire behavior to build upon and enrich the skills acquired in Red Card training. The curriculum will focus on pumps & chainsaws (S-211 & S-212) as well as personal growth and development for success in wildland fire. Graduates of this Academy will have the basic qualifications to obtain employment on fuels crews, fire crews, engines and helicopter modules.   • Intermediate Wildland Firefighter Academy (Location – Chugiak, May 5th-15th) – Academy is aimed at entry level Wildland & Fire Resource Technicians as well as EFF who have multiple years of fire experience on Crews and as Initial Attack resources. Cadets will focus on building the knowledge and capabilities to take their careers to the next level, moving from followship roles to leadership.   • Initial Attack Academy (Location – TBD, May 16th-25th) – The Academy Working Group has continued development of the 10-day curriculum built around the skills and abilities necessary to successfully perform in the role of Incident Commander during the Initial Attack phase of fire suppression. We are placing a strong emphasis on size-up, ordering, building an IA organization, coordinating with dispatch, FMOs & Agency Administrators as well as adherence to LCES during the first 48 hours of a new start. This Academy is structured around the mentor/trainee relationship and carried out as on-the-job training, in simulations and skills practices.
  • Administrator Academy (Location – TBD, May 16th-25th) – Academy is attached to the Initial Attack Academy and will allow administrators to become proficient in a variety of task associated with support of fire activity. Payroll, comp-claims, contractor & vendor resources, equipment packets, cooperator agreements, land use agreements, emergency hire, procurement, ordering, fire coding and many other administrative tasks and duties integral to fire support will be explored and practiced.
