2024 DOF WILDLAND FIRE ACADEMIES

The Division of Forestry and Fire Protection is hosting five targeted training academies in the spring of 2024. Contact your Area Office to apply. All applicants must be sponsored by an Agency and nominations will be submitted by your training officer.

  • Wildland Fire Prevention, Investigation & Compliance-Enforcement Academy (Location – Wasilla, February 12th-23rd) – This ten-day program is designed to introduce students to various aspects of the DOF wildland fire prevention program including public education, burn permitting, fire investigation, Alaska wildland fire protection laws, interagency collaborations, and the compliance-enforcement program. Academy modules include both classroom and hands on training and will be taught by experienced DOF wildland fire prevention staff, subject matter experts, Park Rangers, and the SOA Department of Law.
  • Basic Wildland Firefighter Academy (Location - Chugiak, April 21st-30th) – Academy provides basic training in wildland suppression and fire behavior to build upon and enrich the skills acquired in Red Card training. Graduates of these Academies will have the basic qualifications to obtain employment on fuels crews, fire crews, engines and helicopter modules.   • Intermediate Wildland Firefighter Academy (Location – Chugiak, May 4th-13th) – Academy is aimed at entry level Wildland & Fire Resource Technicians as well as EFF who have multiple years of fire experience on Crews and as Initial Attack resources. Cadets will focus on building the knowledge and capabilities to take their careers to the next level. Firefighters ready to move up to the Squad Boss/FFT1 level can apply by clicking here.
  • Initial Attack Academy (Location – Fairbanks, May 13th-22nd) – The Academy Working Group has developed an 8 day curriculum built around S-215 and S-271 with a day of medical/medivac skills included. The classroom portions of each offering will be covered during the first half of the Academy followed by several days of field exercises and initial attack simulations to reinforce and build upon the NWCG courses. We are placing a strong emphasis on size-up, ordering, building an IA organization, coordinating with FMOs & Agency Administrators and adherence to LCES during the first 48 hours of a new start.
  • Redcard Academy – This Academy is in development for midsummer 2024, updates will be posted as they become available.
