Alaska Native Corporations established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) are encouraged to take advantage of the Forest Stewardship Program to support long-term land management goals.
Assistance is typically provided through grant funding, which allows corporations to hire a qualified natural resource advisor—either as a consultant or as in-house staff. These grants are designed to support the development of a Forest Stewardship Plan and generally include:
- A broad inventory of forest resources
- Land designations using detailed mapping
- A 10-year management plan based on landowner priorities
Forest Stewardship Plans that meet specific requirements can be used to qualify for financial cost-share programs through the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS).
Grant applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with funding awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
